The Story of the Sarah Agnes Foundation

Launched in 2015 in response to a lack of affordable counselling services, SAF’s mission was simple – to ensure that people living in poverty are given equal access to therapeutic support.

SAF Launches in 2015

The Sarah Agnes Foundation provided counselling and psychotherapy services to individuals, couples, families, and children, both virtually and in-person. As a BACP Accredited Service, SAF demonstrated the highest standards of ethics and professionalism in its work.

Opens self-referrals in 2016

Our services began as a route for professional referrals only. Due to demand and an increased need for simplified access, SAF introduced self-referrals which soon became the most common way for people to access our services.

SAF Launches Pay-As-You-Can scheme in 2016

Working with universities, colleges, and community organisations, SAF created a network of qualified therapists and professionally supervised placement therapists to work across communities affected by higher levels of deprivation and poverty. Funded by our grants, this model provided a collaborative way to deliver services whilst creating a lasting impact.

Wellbeing Workshops Launched in 2018

For some, the stigma around mental health can be the biggest barrier to starting therapy. By delivering wellbeing workshops targeted at specific and common issues experienced in mental health, we enabled individuals to use this as a standalone service or a gateway to counselling.

School Partnership Programme Announced in 2019

As child and adolescent mental health issues rose dramatically in the UK, schools in disadvantaged areas are often left struggling to provide pastoral and therapeutic support due to staffing and budgeting issues. SAF has worked with countless schools in a number of ways by providing a range of services including workshops, assemblies, 1:1 student sessions, and counselling for teachers.

Virtual Counselling Introduced For All Clients in 2020

Since launching, SAF offered virtual counselling for those unable to travel to SAF centres due to illness, or disability. As COVID-19 grounded the UK and access to in-person counselling, SAF introduced virtual counselling for all clients.

Tribute to Our Founder: March 2025

We are sad to announce the passing of our Founder, Agnes Rees. Agnes started the Sarah Agnes Foundation with one simple mission: to make sure that people living on low incomes or in deprivation, have the same access to private counselling services as anyone else. Her tireless dedication to this mission is the reason SAF has touched the lives of thousands of people.

The Sarah Agnes Foundation Closes

In 2025, the Sarah Agnes Foundation closes its doors after years of dedicated service to individuals and families facing hardship. Having reached thousands of people through its compassionate support and community-based work, the Foundation leaves behind a strong legacy of care, commitment, and impact. Though its operations have come to an end, the values and positive change it inspired will continue to live on through the lives it touched and the partnerships it built.

Our Impact.

Since our founding in 2015, we are incredibly proud of the impact the Sarah Agnes Foundation has made in the lives of those facing hardship. Over the years, we have reached thousands of individuals and families, offering vital support to those living in deprived areas and on low incomes. Through the dedication of our team, volunteers, and supporters, we’ve helped create stronger, more resilient communities and brought hope to those who needed it most. The difference we’ve made together stands as a powerful testament to our mission and the collective effort behind it.
